Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7): An award-winning fusion of traditional Korean music, pop and funk

Amsterdam Roots Festival is known for presenting cultural and musical highlights from around the world. This year is no exception, with the addition of Ak Dan Gwang Chil - the multi-award winning Korean music group.

With their diverse Korean instruments and powerful vocals based on folk traditions, ADG7 creates a unique blend of Korean music, pop and funk with humorous elements. The group consists of six traditional Korean musicians and three powerful female folk singers. Their repertoire includes music from the sacred, shamanic and secular gut (ritual music) and minyo (folk song) traditions of the Hwanghae-do region, now a western province of North Korea.

Ak Dan Gwang Chil, founded to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, expresses the true meaning of liberation and South Korea's desire for reunification. They have recently won several awards, including the Sori Frontier Award at the 2017 Jeonju International Sori Festival.
