Sustainability

Stichting Amsterdam Roots is an organization committed to creating a free and accessible festival where everyone feels welcome. Over the past 44 years, Amsterdam Roots has built a large community of visitors, partners, and volunteers.

We also want to avoid burdening future generations with our waste, which is why we make as many environmentally friendly and sustainable choices as possible when organizing our festival.

Waste as a Resource
Since 2019, Amsterdam Roots has been working on reducing its waste streams and collecting raw materials. We separate waste streams so they can be offered to external suppliers for recycling.

Amsterdam Roots Festival mainly serves drinks in cans, which can be easily collected and recycled after use. Additionally, we only use biodegradable PLA cups. Snacks and meals at the Roots Bazaar are also not served in PET plastic. Behind the scenes, we use environmentally friendly PLA cups, biodegradable cardboard, and responsibly sourced wood/bamboo.

Cleaner Electricity
The festival stages of Amsterdam Roots run entirely on green energy. The municipality has installed power points in the park, allowing the festival to use the existing electricity grid. The remaining power is supplied by the sustainable energy from the Moving Arts Project vehicles: KAREL’s KARAVAAN.

Deposit System
Amsterdam Roots uses a deposit system. Return a can? You receive a €0.15 discount on your next drink. We submit the cans through Statiegeld.nl for recycling.

Free and Accessible Festival
By purchasing a drink at the festival and returning your can, you not only contribute to a cleaner park but also help sustain the free and accessible Amsterdam Roots Festival! Visitors can also support the festival by purchasing a softcup with the Amsterdam Roots logo.
