Workshop: Sufret Salma
Workshop: Sufret Salma – Salma’s Kitchen Table
Discover the rich aromas, flavors, and stories of Palestinian cuisine in this special workshop with Salma Barakat, founder of Sufret Salma.
Originally from Gaza City, Salma sees cooking as a way to keep memories alive and build bridges. Every dish she prepares carries a story — of family, traditions, and a culture that continues to endure against all odds. As she says: “a plate of food tells the entire history of a country.”
During this workshop, Salma takes you into the world of Palestinian cuisine. You will get to know characteristic ingredients such as sumac, za’atar, and olive oil, learn about traditional preparation methods, and discover how flavors, seasons, and landscapes come together in recipes passed down through generations.
Alongside cooking and tasting, there is space for personal stories about resilience, community, and the connecting power of food. For Salma, cooking is more than a craft — it is a way to heal, remember, and share. She invites you to see Gaza through a different lens: not only as a place of conflict, but as a source of strength, connection, and hope.
Sufret Salma is part of a program series by Tugela85 exploring the Politics of Food from the Hood.
