Immersive experience of music and stories from the African diaspora of Curacao

Curaçao has a unique archive of sound recordings from the 1950s of stories and folk songs of the Afro-Curaçao inhabitants. These recordings form the basis of the performance 'Imershon', in which composer and percussionist Vernon Chatlein immerses his audience in the richness of the culture of Curaçao.

Chatlein mixes sound fragments from the archive with his own compositions, and thus brings "an ode to our ancestors, our language and all its magic". He chooses an intimate setting. The audience sits around the musicians. All around are speakers, from which fragments and samples from the Zikinzá archive sound. These are mixed with modern sounds, stories and improvisations and immerse the audience in the music, history and traditions of Curaçao.
