Trio da Kali
Mali’s music traditions rediscovered
After their impressive collaboration with the Kronos Quartet in 2017, Malian Trio da Kali now presents their newest album Bagola at Amsterdam Roots Festival. On this album, Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, daughter of the legendary griot Kassé Mady Diabaté, along with Lassana Diabaté on the balafon and Mamadou Kouyaté (son of Bassekou Kouyaté) on the n’goni, weave together generations of music and storytelling traditions with influences from jazz, Afro-Mexican music, and classical compositions. On stage, Hawa’s powerful and expressive vocals, the sparkling melodies of the n’goni, and the deep sounds of the balafon merge into a timeless and genre-transcending musical experience. Their performance demonstrates how powerful and inspiring Malian griot music still is today.
