Marionette theatre from Jaipur
Lalaland presents: marionette theatre from Jaipur
From Jaipur, in the desert state of Rajasthan, Ravi Bhatt & troupe bring the traditional marionette theatre kathputli to life. This ancient art form has been passed down through generations and is an essential part of North Indian storytelling traditions, where history, folklore, and social themes come together.
In a vibrant and colorful performance, handcrafted puppets come alive, accompanied by singing and the sounds of the harmonium, dholak, and khadtal—a distinctive percussion instrument that enhances the rhythm and dynamics of the stories. With humor and craftsmanship, Ravi and his brothers guide the audience through an enchanting world of music, movement, and mysticism.
The performance is part of the Indian programme curated by guest curator LALALAND Festival, which, at the invitation of Amsterdam Roots, presents a selection of gems from both contemporary and traditional Indian arts and culture.
